The Crooked Cabin
A little piece of Wonderland in the Arizona desert.
The Crooked Cabin began as a world I had in my head.
I wanted to create something that felt magical and unexpected — a tiny home in the middle of nowhere where the normal rules of a house could bend a little. A place inspired by the feeling of Wonderland: playful, strange, dreamlike, and designed to make you forget where you are for a moment.
That idea shaped everything.
The curved roof, the crooked lines, the unusual shapes, the black-and-white entrance, the oversized mushroom, and the handcrafted furniture were never meant to make a conventional tiny home. Inside, lavender, black and gold, soft lighting, curved cabinetry and unexpected details continue the feeling that you have stepped into a different little world.
But the magic was also in the contrast.
Outside, there is almost nothing — five peaceful acres of open Arizona desert, endless sky and distant mountain views. Inside, there is this intimate, imaginative world that feels completely disconnected from what surrounds it.
Located just 20 minutes from the Grand Canyon South Rim, the cabin was designed around simplicity too: a custom kitchen, a bed, a small table, and large views of the landscape. Everything needed to slow down, disconnect and simply be there.
The goal was never just to build a tiny home. It was to create the feeling of stepping into Wonderland.
To take something that existed in my imagination and make it real enough for someone else to walk inside and experience it.
The Crooked Cabin became an important part of the Vancy universe — and an early expression of an idea that continues through my work today:
Spaces don’t have to simply give us a place to live. They can take us somewhere else.
The Crooked Cabin has now been sold, and its story continues with a new owner.
